The newly opened Homer Stryker MD School of Medicine (WMed) is seeking an exceptional leader to serve as the Chair of Psychiatry. The Chair will provide academic leadership for the department of Psychiatry, and expand and build collaborative relationships and grow innovative programs. The successful Department Chair candidate will have a substantial record of leadership and achievements in academic medicine, education, and research; be board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology; be qualified for appointment at the rank of associate professor or full professor; and be eligible for a license in the state of Michigan.
WMed, an innovative, community-based medical school is supported primarily by private gifts, clinical revenue, research activity, student tuition, and endowment income. The new medical school is a collaboration involving Western Michigan University, a top 100 national public doctoral university in the U.S., and two award-winning teaching hospitals, nationally recognized for innovation and quality. WMed is one of the few U.S. medical schools in several decades to be built entirely from the ground up. The inaugural class of 54 students will be graduating this summer 2018!--
The Department of Psychiatry at WMed includes 13 psychiatrists and 1 psychologist who support an ACGME accredited residency program for general psychiatry that matches 6 residents per year. Faculty specialize in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Geriatric Psychiatry, and Consultation Psychiatry. --The Department is responsible for a 50-bed adult/geriatric/adolescent inpatient unit with approximately 10,000 inpatient visits per year; plus, a 10-bed Adolescent Partial Program, and ECT services. --The catchment area is Southwest Michigan which includes a population of 1 million people. --Opportunities in the department continue to grow, including an eight-bed dedicated Psychiatry Emergency Department that was opened in 2017. --The Kalamazoo Collaborative Care Project is also being developed to help primary care physicians provide quality care for patients suffering from depression, also offering a unique training experience in integrative care.--
Opened in June 2014, WMed's new $68 million, 350,000 square foot educational building includes a state-of-the-art 24,000 square foot Simulation Center to promote SBL curriculum with 8 simulation rooms, procedure labs, task trainer rooms, 12 standardized patient exam rooms, and 6 classrooms. There is an established Center for Clinical Research which allows opportunities and resources for developing clinical research programs. The medical school has more than 200 residents and fellows in eight residency and two fellowship programs. Over 100 employed faculty and more than 200 community physicians are involved in medical school teaching and research programs. WMed Clinics provide more than 58,000 outpatient visits annually in primary care and subspecialty clinics with a full range of on-site ancillary services.--
