General Description of Position:

The Teacher/Teacher Specialist or Teacher Consultant (TC) will provide direct or indirect services to students who are eligible as deaf or hard of hearing (DHH). The Teacher/Teacher Specialist or Teacher Consultant in this position will also provide consultation and professional learning to general education and special education teachers, administrators and parents/guardians on behalf of students who qualify as deaf or hard of hearing impaired.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct formal and informal assessment of students to assist in the determination of Deaf or Hard of Hearing Impaired eligibility, the present level of educational performance and the impact of the hearing loss in the school environment.
  • Assist in the development of a research-based educational program that can be used successfully in the general education classroom.
  • Complete and present a written evaluation report to parents/guardians and the local educational agency within required timelines.
  • Maintain records of student progress and assist in the development of goals and objectives.
  • Participate in Individualized Education Program (IEP) team meetings, on Multidisciplinary Evaluation Team (MET) meetings and other meetings as appropriate.
  • Consult with other personnel including teachers, principals, other ancillary staff and parents to evaluate program effectiveness.
  • Monitor hearing impaired equipment/devices and make needed repairs (FM systems, sound field systems, cochlear or other implant); assist in the maintenance of hearing aids and other equipment.
  • Knowledge of or ability to interpret various measurements of hearing thresholds and apply to educational settings.
  • Provide academic coaching, support and/or direct instruction as appropriate.
  • Provide staff development and parent training.
  • Assist with planning and adapting curriculum, lessons and teaching methods and provide specific material/equipment to teacher or student as appropriate.
  • Establish and maintain appropriate records, reports and procedures including, but not limited to, lesson plans, behavioral data and student progress on IEP goals/objectives.
  • Travel to meet job requirements.
  • Conduct parent/teacher conferences.
  • Share information regarding community resources/agencies with parent/guardian as appropriate.
  • Provide prereferral consultation.
  • Complete Medicaid documentation in a timely manner as appropriate.
  • Knowledge of sign language.
  • Use various software packages for communication and documentation purposes.
  • Maintain regular consistent attendance and punctuality.
  • Maintain a professional personal appearance.
  • Adhere to district health and safety procedures.
  • Other duties may be assigned.
  • Adhere to Board policies.
  • Maintain confidentiality.

Education and/or Experience:

Must meet Michigan Department of Education requirements for full/temporary approval as a Teacher Consultant.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Must possess a valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with Deaf and Hard of Hearing Impaired Endorsement, Master's Degree in education or related field to special education and full approval for a Teacher or Teacher Consultant.

Salary: Commensurate with experience and contract in effect.

B.Complaint/Grievance Procedure Notice

I.Any person believing that the Calhoun Intermediate School District or any of the District's staff has inadequately applied the principles and/or regulations of non-discrimination laws or district non-discrimination policies may bring forward a complaint, which shall be referred to as a grievance to the district's Civil Rights Coordinator.

II.The person who believes s/he has a valid basis for grievance shall discuss the grievance informally and on a verbal basis with the District's Civil Rights Coordinator, who shall in turn investigate the complaint and reply with verbal answer to the complainant. S/He may initiate formal procedures according to the following steps:

Step 1

A written statement of the grievance signed by the complainant shall be submitted to the District's Civil Rights Coordinator within five (5) business days of receipt of answers to the informal complaint. The Coordinator shall further investigate the matters of grievance and reply in writing to the complainant within five (5) business days.

Step 2

If the complainant wishes to appeal the decision of the District's Civil Rights Coordinator, s/he may submit a signed statement of appeal to the Superintendent of Schools within five (5) business days after receipt of the Coordinator's response. The Superintendent shall meet with all parties involved, formulate a conclusion and respond in writing to the complainant within ten (10) business days.

Step 3

If the complainant remains unsatisfied, s/he may appeal through a signed written statement to the Board of Education within five (5) business days of his/her receipt of the Superintendent's response in step two. In an attempt to resolve the grievance, the Board of Education shall meet with the concerned parties and their representative within twenty (20) business days of the receipt of such an appeal. A copy of the Board's disposition of the appeal shall be sent to each concerned party within ten (10) business days of this meeting.

The District's Coordinator, on request, will provide a copy of the District's grievance procedure and investigate all complaints in accordance with this procedure.

A copy of each of the Acts and the regulations on which this notice is based may be found in the District Coordinator's office.
