Associate Scientist / Senior Associate Scientist
Posted on: January 15, 2022
The Associate Scientist/Senior Associate Scientist in the Cell
Line Development (CLD) Lab will play an essential role in the
Zoetis Biopharmaceutical strategy for veterinary medicine. The
successful applicant will contribute as an effective team member to
drive the generation and characterization of stable cell lines in
support of global development and the GMP (Good Manufacturing
Practice) manufacture of veterinary biopharmaceuticals. The
incumbent is expected to work hands-on at the bench while garnering
strong technical skills and learning to provide technical
leadership to project teams within their discipline. The Assoc.
Scientist/Sr. Assoc. Scientist is expected to work with a degree of
autonomy after training and contribute to the progress of projects
in partnership with colleagues in Upstream and Downstream Process
Development, Formulations, and Bioanalytical Sciences. To be
successful, they will have knowledge of cell and molecular biology
and experience with mammalian cell line tissue culture. Their work
will involve the generation of stable Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO)
cells for expression of recombinant proteins and monoclonal
antibodies. The position is based in Kalamazoo (Michigan, USA) with
frequent interactions with colleagues and external partners located
around the globe.
-Application of cell and molecular biology knowledge and experience
to generate and characterize stable CHO cell lines for the
expression of recombinant proteins and monoclonal antibodies.
-Generate stable cell lines suitable for manufacture of both
clinical supplies and commercial products in accord with GMP.
-Systematically optimize the genetic and cell culture parameters
that impact the productivity of transfected cell lines.
-Contribute towards the optimization of CLD workflows that ensure
clonality and stability of transfected cell lines.
-Author study reports that describe cell lineages and write
sections of dossiers to support regulatory filings for new product
registrations. This task will include the execution of protocols
for testing the cell lines to ensure purity and identity in accord
with global regulatory requirements.
-Represent the CLD function on technical teams for the development
of new veterinary biopharmaceuticals.
-Strive for continuous improvement by streamlining existing
workflows in order to increase the efficiency of CLD work.
-Assist in the implementation of strategies that support the
mid-term goals of the CLD function. Such would include the
evaluation of proprietary platform technologies offered for
high-titer expression in CHO cell lines.
-Maintain electronic laboratory notebooks and records in accord
with scientific protocol and applicable Standard Operating
-Develop constructive working relationships in both internal and
external networks for the purpose of strengthening the CLD function
and to align team goals with organizational objectives.
-Demonstrate excellent organization skills in order to engage in
Preferred technical skills include:
-Knowledge in the scientific disciplines that support CLD, such as
molecular biology, biochemistry, cell physiology, and
-Hands-on practical experience with tools and approaches commonly
used in CLD, which may include transfection, limiting dilution,
FACS, imaging, etc.
-An ability to understand regulatory expectations for critical
aspects of cell bank quality, including clonality and
-Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Education and experience include:
-BSc or MS in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology or a
related discipline with 0-3 years of industry or related experience
