Job Description:

The Associate Scientist/Senior Associate Scientist in the Cell Line Development (CLD) Lab will play an essential role in the Zoetis Biopharmaceutical strategy for veterinary medicine. The successful applicant will contribute as an effective team member to drive the generation and characterization of stable cell lines in support of global development and the GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) manufacture of veterinary biopharmaceuticals. The incumbent is expected to work hands-on at the bench while garnering strong technical skills and learning to provide technical leadership to project teams within their discipline. The Assoc. Scientist/Sr. Assoc. Scientist is expected to work with a degree of autonomy after training and contribute to the progress of projects in partnership with colleagues in Upstream and Downstream Process Development, Formulations, and Bioanalytical Sciences. To be successful, they will have knowledge of cell and molecular biology and experience with mammalian cell line tissue culture. Their work will involve the generation of stable Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) cells for expression of recombinant proteins and monoclonal antibodies. The position is based in Kalamazoo (Michigan, USA) with frequent interactions with colleagues and external partners located around the globe.

Responsibilities include:

-Application of cell and molecular biology knowledge and experience to generate and characterize stable CHO cell lines for the expression of recombinant proteins and monoclonal antibodies.

-Generate stable cell lines suitable for manufacture of both clinical supplies and commercial products in accord with GMP.

-Systematically optimize the genetic and cell culture parameters that impact the productivity of transfected cell lines.

-Contribute towards the optimization of CLD workflows that ensure clonality and stability of transfected cell lines.

-Author study reports that describe cell lineages and write sections of dossiers to support regulatory filings for new product registrations. This task will include the execution of protocols for testing the cell lines to ensure purity and identity in accord with global regulatory requirements.

-Represent the CLD function on technical teams for the development of new veterinary biopharmaceuticals.

-Strive for continuous improvement by streamlining existing workflows in order to increase the efficiency of CLD work.

-Assist in the implementation of strategies that support the mid-term goals of the CLD function. Such would include the evaluation of proprietary platform technologies offered for high-titer expression in CHO cell lines.

-Maintain electronic laboratory notebooks and records in accord with scientific protocol and applicable Standard Operating Procedures.

-Develop constructive working relationships in both internal and external networks for the purpose of strengthening the CLD function and to align team goals with organizational objectives.

-Demonstrate excellent organization skills in order to engage in multiple projects.

Preferred technical skills include:

-Knowledge in the scientific disciplines that support CLD, such as molecular biology, biochemistry, cell physiology, and microbiology.

-Hands-on practical experience with tools and approaches commonly used in CLD, which may include transfection, limiting dilution, FACS, imaging, etc.

-An ability to understand regulatory expectations for critical aspects of cell bank quality, including clonality and stability.

-Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Education and experience include:

-BSc or MS in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology or a related discipline with 0-3 years of industry or related experience in CLD.
