School Counselor - L.E. White Middle School QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's Degree in Education, Social Work, Psychology, or related
field; Masters Degree preferred. Certification in Guidance
Counseling meeting MI Standards. Teaching experience preferred with
Michigan Teacher Certificate. Maturity, patience, and people skills
to work effectively with students with diverse needs. Strong,
demonstrated interpersonal skills, both written and oral. REPORTS
TO: Principal JOB GOAL: L.E. White Middle School guidance
counselors' first priority is to serve all students'
social-emotional needs. The counselors work closely as a team with
support staff, teachers, and administrators to identify students in
need of support. APS guidance counselors are also responsible for
individualized student scheduling based on Career Pathways and
student career exploration. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS UNDER SECTION
31(A): (include but are not limited to): Support students'
social-emotional needs. Provide individual counseling as needed.
Support and guide teaching staff in addressing students'
social-emotional needs. Consult with parents, teachers,
administrators and supporting agencies concerning the behavioral,
mental, and emotional needs of students. Provide and facilitate
small group counseling interventions (examples: grief group, anger
management group, LGBTQ group, PALs groups, etc.). Communicate
effectively with all members of the school district and community.
Promote a positive working relationship with students, staff, and
members of the community. Work effectively with community
organizations. Make referrals to outside sources when extended
counseling or support is necessary. Support the Assistant Principal
in working with students and families who are chronically absent
Assist in determining interventions and accommodations for students
who qualify for 504 Plans Participate in the building key personnel
team and county crisis intervention team. Pursue continuous
professional growth by keeping current with educational
developments and literature in the field of school guidance.
Participate in the county- wide guidance counselors' monthly team
meetings. Perform other duties as allowable under the funding
source. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS UNDER GENERAL FUND: (include but
are not limited to): Assisting the administration with creating the
master schedule. Coordinating, planning and helping to proctor
statewide testing. Planning and delivering student career
exploration experiences for all students per state requirements.
Enrolling and welcoming all new students and families to the
buildings. PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: Demonstrated ability to
handle and resolve conflict productively. Demonstrated ability to
establish and maintain boundaries with students/families. Maintain
confidentiality of student records and information. Demonstrated
ability to adhere to Board and Building policies and procedures.
Ability to be on the job regularly and have a positive attendance
record. Ability to utilize technology (i.e., telephone, cell phone,
iPad, laptop computer, desktop computer, printer, copier, fax
machine, etc.) Assist in maintaining a positive school environment
that promotes safety, security and well-being for all students.
Demonstrate effective behavior management skills and the ability to
implement preventative and reductive interventions and teach
replacement behaviors. Assist in the day-to-day operation of
school-wide PBIS, including Restorative Practices. Maintain
accurate documentation in accordance with legal mandates and
