Job Description:

The Building Automation Engineer maintains and oversees all Building Management System (BMS) hardware/software and PLC-based systems used to monitor and control HVAC infrastructure in support of Zoetis research and development operations. These systems monitor and control ventilation, heating, cooling, humidity, and differential air pressure across a wide range of facilities that include office, laboratory, and vivarium spaces, many of which require unique environmental parameters and set points. This role provides key expertise as part of a multi-faceted Facilities/Utilities Engineering and Maintenance Team and works directly and often independently with various R&D scientists and lab/vivarium operations personnel. The primary responsibilities of this role include:

  • Monitors and maintains the centralized BMS environment and manages the life cycle of BMS-related components (software, control devices, sensors, network panels, etc.)
  • Provides expertise and guidance on new construction projects and space remodeling projects as it pertains to HVAC-related monitoring and control, including interfacing of the building/space control infrastructure with centralized BMS systems
  • Provides overall direction and oversight for the engineering/design, installation, configuration, and commissioning of BMS software and control equipment, which includes oversight of 3rd-party engineering personnel, equipment/hardware installation technicians, and BMS programmers working on company premises or remotely
  • Develops and manages project plans, project scope, staffing arrangements, schedules and budgets for BMS-centric project work including BMS system expansions, interfaces, and hardware/software upgrades
  • Creates and manages BMS user accounts, manages system change control, and ensures that appropriate security and disaster recovery procedures are in place for BMS systems in accordance with company IT policies and procedures
  • Helps to assess the condition of HVAC systems and other mechanical components that are monitored and controlled by BMS systems, and helps to prioritize the preventative maintenance, repair and/or replacement strategies for these mechanical components
  • Provides support for facility and equipment capital budgeting and project planning
  • Performs troubleshooting of BMS control and monitoring hardware/software and ensures smooth startup and recovery of HVAC systems and BMS systems after planned and unplanned power shutdowns and outages
  • Creates and/or provides reports of BMS event data to determine historical environmental state information, e.g., to show environmental status of a space directly before, during and after an unplanned HVAC disruption
  • Develops and recommends training plans for self and other support staff as it relates to the BMS and automation systems
  • Job requires at least 60% local on-site work and ability to travel occasionally to other US sites (less than 5%)

    • Five or more years of experience supporting large industrial-scale facility HVAC systems that are centrally monitored and controlled, preferably within a pharmaceutical or biotechnology research environment
    • Proven competency in managing and operating BMS software (e.g., Siemens Desigo, InfoCenter, Apogee, Insight, RENO) and PLC-based systems (e.g., DeltaV, Allen Bradley, Siemens S7) and experience in understanding, writing, updating, and debugging computer programs used for controlling these systems
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills with ability to present proposals, plans, diagnosis of technical issues, pending risks and opportunities, etc. to all levels of technical and managerial professional staff
    • Excellent and proven teamwork and leadership skills
    • Proven experience in creating and evaluating project plans, budgets and schedules for utilities-based projects
    • Experience managing 3rd-party contracted service providers in accordance with internal policies, standards, and work practices
    • Experience in facilities project management, including managing costs and scope, schedule, work quality, supplier management, ensuring project worker/team safety, solution testing and commissioning, and adherence to all applicable financial, safety and regulatory requirements
    • Ability to work during scheduled utility shutdowns which normally occur during weekends and other non-business hours
    • Proficiency using the Microsoft Office Suite of tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project)
    • Practical knowledge of BSL2/BSL3 lab standards and AAALAC operating standards and guidelines highly desired
    • Bachelor's Degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or related discipline with a minimum of 5 years of related industry experience OR Associate's Degree or advanced training certification in electronics, mechanical systems, control systems, HVAC or similar technical field with a minimum of 10 years of related industry experience
