Job description: MISSION / SUMMARY:The Paper Machine
Superintendent III is responsible for the safe, environmentally
sound, and efficient operation of No. 3 Paper Machine, including
equipment, processes, and people. This position reports to the
Production Manager and will have responsibility for approximately
48 hourly operations personnel and 5 salaried personnel. The salary
staff comprises 1 Assistant Superintendent and 4 Shift
Supervisors.JOB FUNCTIONS:Oversight of the operation of a 350 TPD
Coated Recycled Board Machine. Key areas of responsibility include
safety, environmental compliance, employee engagement, hourly and
salaried team development, process productivity, efficiency and
reliability of the daily operation. Oversight of department
financial performance to include cost management and annual
budgeting, product quality, and capital planning is required.
Additional responsibilities will also include the direction of
technical resources and process experts who support the business
unit.
- Assisting Operations personnel in resolving manufacturing and
maintenance problems to ensure safe operations and prevent
operational delays and downtime while minimizing costs.
- Work on teams to help develop and manage capital and
maintenance projects.
- Perform paperboard production troubleshooting in all areas of
manufacturing: stock prep, paper machines, and rewinding.
- Examine procedures and recommends changes to improve quality
and operating efficiency, and to maximize productivity. Plans and
executes trials to achieve desired results.
- Participate in various team activities (Safety, Lean-sigma,
etc.), providing leadership to keep teams goals and results
consistent with company direction.
- Fulfills duties of Superintendents in their absence (vacations,
training, etc.) on an as needed basis
- Provide coverage for supervisor vacancies (absences, vacations,
training, etc.) on an as needed basis.
- Provide weekend coverage in production department rotation
Qualifications: BACKGROUND / EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in a Paper Mill production
area (coated board experience preferred)
- Clear record of safety / environmental commitment and
results
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the
ability to communicate to groups and individuals at all levels
- Strong commitment to reliability and to the use of
Manufacturing Excellence tools/systems to ensure sustainability of
progress
- Demonstrated leadership focused on accountability and
results
- Develop direct reports through meaningful one-to-one
discussions
- Demonstrated ability to lead a reliability culture where a
clear partnership exists between Engineering, Operations, and
Maintenance
- Skilled in Planning and Scheduling
- Thorough knowledge of paper equipment and systemsEDUCATION /
KNOWLEDGE:
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering or related field
required
- Supervisory experience preferred

- Proactive problem solverSCHEDULE DEMANDS:
- General schedule is an 8 -hour M-F assignment, however,
employee must be willing to work alternate schedules occasionally;
that may include early mornings, nights, and/or weekends and be
punctual while doing so. Occasional overnight travel to include
flying, driving, riding or by rail. Must be willing to work weekend
duty.PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Frequent, bending, stooping, squatting, as well as frequent
movement throughout the facility for extended periods of time up to
8 -hour
- Occasional Lifting up to 20 lbs.
- Reading computer screen or other electronic devices.
- Use of various office, hand tools or electrical equipment
- Employee is required to wear steel toe shoes, safety glasses
and hearing protecting when in the manufacturing area.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is
occasionally exposed to airborne particles and times of increased
heat and humidity.
- The noise level in the immediate work environment is normally
quiet, however requires exposure to a noisy manufacturing
